The Brief

E commerce’s and logistics giant, Buy it Direct asked us to refresh their dated lighting, focusing on improving the light levels and reducing both their maintenance and energy bills.

Their Huddersfield distribution center is a 385,000ft² warehouse. The site is used around the clock and, because of the constant use, their current system incurred high energy bills and required a lot of maintenance.

After an extensive survey and discussion with the team at Buy It Direct, we were able to propose a new lighting solution to improve the lighting on site whilst optimising the current system.

The Solution

Although their current lighting system was old and outdated, the pre-installed bus-bar was perfect for easily adjusting the system to suit. We replaced all the warehouse fixtures around 3,000 twin T5 battens with around 500 Risolutio LED  racking luminaries which are extremely efficient and long lasting. The Risolutio is a robust product that will cope with the demands of a 24-hour distribution centre. The Risolutio transitions between open areas and wide aisles whilst maintaining consistent light levels throughout the site. The Risolutio has a specific optics to utilise the light output in an efficient way to suit either normal or narrow aisles along with the open areas, in this environment it reduces the wastage of light and energy giving.

We integrated a daylight harvesting system to make the best use of natural daylight. By installing dimmable drivers together with both, efficient lighting fixtures and passive infrared sensors detecting thermal movement, savings were made. These aspects of the lighting design and control units now provide them with ideal light levels for close inspection work and good uniformity throughout the dynamic workspace.
